The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) drives technological innovation in the areas of energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, and renewable power. Our Communications & Public Affairs Office is looking for a  Front End Web Developer to create and maintain websites for NREL.

As a Front End Web Developer, you will collaborate with other web developers, web content specialists, project managers, web designers, and clients. This position requires the ability to manage multiple projects with limited supervision, as well as strong HTML, CSS, and JavaScript skills.  

This position primarily creates and maintains multiple websites. We use a CMS for development, but we are looking for someone who knows how to code without a CMS and is experienced with HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap, and responsive design. The position also manages multiple email platforms including MailChimp, Contact Monkey, GovDelivery, and Outlook. Experience creating HTML email from scratch is desired. Interested candidates should be comfortable working within a CMS and will be expected to train others on how to use it. Experience sizing and optimize images for web is also required. We receive many quick turnaround maintenance requests, so the ability to juggle multiple tasks efficiently is critical. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual who demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and quality and is comfortable interacting directly with researchers and communications colleagues.  

 

Job duties

  • Create and maintain websites using CMS
  • Manage email tools and creating HTML email
  • Train end users on the CMS
  • Optimize images for web
  • Demonstrate and champion web and UX best practices
  • Work with clients to achieve optimal solutions
  • Perform standards and accessibility quality assurance checks on websites and applications

 

Successful candidates will have:

  • Exceptional HTML5 and CSS skills
  • Strong knowledge of Bootstrap
  • Experience with JavaScript/jQuery
  • Experience using CMSs such as Drupal and WordPress
  • Experience with HTML email development and tools such as MailChimp
  • Experience with PhotoShop, including optimizing images for web
  • Understanding of web and UX best practices
  • Nimbleness needed to multitask in a fast-paced communications agency setting
  • Attention to detail and quality
  • Strong sense for design
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies
  • Willingness to collaborate well with others
  • Experience working on government websites and familiarity with Section 508 accessibility standards.

As part of the Communications and Public Affairs Office’s Digital Services & Scientific Publishing Group, the Web and Application Development team supports the development and maintenance of websites for NREL, as well as DOE and other partnering organizations.
