Position

We want to make Population Explorer the go-to source for demographic data, and we’re well on our way there! As a Front-End Developer, you will work on the Population Explorer application and your work will directly impact the success of the product.

Day-to-Day

As our number one Front-End Developer, you will work on React UI for Python/Django applications accessed via Django REST framework APIs.

More specifically, you will:

  • Develop responsive front ends for web applications using React
  • Design highly attractive and intuitive UI and liaise with in-house and external graphics and communications experts
  • Manage other front-end developers or outsourced contractors, as required
  • Create GUI proposals and mock ups
  • Implement online mapping solutions using Google Earth, OpenLayers, and other geospatial applications and frameworks
  • Work with Python developers to ensure seamless, fast, and optimized integration and rapid troubleshooting
  • Optimize UX and liaise with team members regarding customer feedback
  • Develop efficient and agile processes for interface design, development, testing, and acceptance
  • Conduct research and ensure that we provide the best available front-end technology to our clients, and advise ForestWalk on our technical stack.

Experience

In order to join the team, we’d like you to have:

  • 5+ years of experience as a front-end developer
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Markup languages
    • ES6, JavaScript, HTML5, SASS or LESS, CSS, and JQuery
    • React, MobX, Leaflet, Turf.js, Axios, Webpack, babel, ESLint, Yarn
  • UX optimization and acceptance testing skills
  • Familiarity with automated browser testing and debugging
  • An in-depth understanding of the development process, from design to deployment, ideally in an agile environment
  • Strong design sense
  • Self-motivation and initiative, able to work under minimal supervision
  • Excellent research, analytical, and multitasking skills
  • Good understanding of asynchronous request handling, partial page updates, and AJAX
  • Solid understanding of Git

Bonus Points

Our ideal candidate will also have:

  • GIS experience with OpenLayers
  • Knowledge of SEO principles
  • KoboToolbox, Superset/Caravel, Pandas and/or Django Rest Framework skills
  • Willingness to work with remote team members 

Education

  • BS in Computer Science or relevant field preferred
