The role

The Field Engineering Manager will report to the Head of Product and will be responsible for empowering and expanding a world-class field engineering team. The aim of this role would be to communicate the needs of customer operating environments to the engineering teams, as well as developing diagnostic tools to empower field personnel. Your team will be the first point of contact for resolving technical issues with field-deployed systems, and you'll be responsible for ensuring that the resolution process continually improves. You and your team will work closely with the commercial teams to understand ongoing customer concerns and development teams to get those issues addressed. 

 

The successful candidate for this role will have broad experience supporting complex, early-stage, mobile-robotics systems in the field. The candidate must be a strong leader and a critical thinker with an aptitude for understanding technical, system-level architecture, as well as a master troubleshooter capable of quickly isolating and solving issues.

 

This opportunity offers a very talented software engineer the chance to help develop a market-defining enterprise product that combines autonomous vehicle technology with a software-as-a-service (SaaS) business model.

Duties and responsibilities

    • Prioritize and advocate for tracking and fixing issues in the field, based on the rate of occurrence, the severity of issue, and the perceived customer effect
    • Represent the needs of the field engineers to headquarters personnel, ingesting and prioritizing issues with internal that engineering teams communicate back
    • Act as an interface between customers, engineering teams, and the executive team
    • Specify, plan, and lead the development of diagnostics infrastructure and tools (both hardware and software-based)
    • Build and empower the field support team to be capable of providing on-site and remote support throughout the product lifecycle
    • Provide technical guidance to the field support team, diving deep to help solve problems, as necessary
    • Establish the team strategy and hire top-notch talent for critical roles
    • Dive into debugging efforts when necessary
    • Commit to travel and field visits, depending on initial customer locations (up to 25%)

Required qualifications

    • BS or MS in electrical/computer engineering, mechatronics engineering, robotics engineering, or equivalent
    • Minimum 5 years' experience in relevant management positions in a transportation, aerospace, or autonomous industry context
    • Knowledge of, and experience with, complex integrated hardware/firmware/software systems operating in the field and on customer sites
    • Demonstrated cross-functional skills, including work with internal executives and customer executives
    • Excellent written and verbal communication and team skills
    • Self-driven nature with demonstrated strong leadership and people skills, especially across remote teams
    • Desire to build out a newer team in a fast-paced, exciting environment
    • Comfort with Linux and command-line tools for basic system debugging
    • Very good time management skills and the ability to quickly make informed decisions

    • Experience with ROS, C, C++, Python, Javascript
    • Full-stack development experience
    • Program / project management experience
