Job Summary
The Engineering Manager serves as a leader to multiple agile product development teams. This role guides the strategic coordination and optimization of behavior across diverse teams and provides technical oversight and guidance while also managing the team members to ensure effective team functioning and product development. They also provide oversight of the product development processes and development teams, giving feedback and developing leaders on those teams. Key responsibilities for which the Engineering Manager is accountable for include: people management; fulfillment of customer requirements, technical oversight, product development planning, process improvement, and stakeholder relationship management.
What You'll Do
• Leads multiple squads, a team, or engineering group composed of Engineers, SDETs, QAA, or Architects. May also manage management level employees.
• Manages, issues, resource needs and risks impacting the group, team priorities and roadmap communicates and partners with R&D leaders.
• Works with direct report manager(s), group leaders and organizational thought leaders to define, assess, and execute product quality strategy.
• Collaborates with team, group, and R&D leaders to define, plan and execute objectives.
• Promotes sustainable product development practices & agile principles ensuring appropriate attention to overall support burden, architectural direction, & tech debt in support of the taxonomy group.
• Contributes to and enacts accountability for the product delivery schedule
• Represents Workiva Engineering at internal and external events
• Communicates, reinforces, and holds teams accountable for developing software within the principles, standards, and best practices for Workiva Product Development (Engineering, Architecture, and Product). Ensures team representation at appropriate architecture guilds; advocates for architecture priorities as a part of the roadmap.
• Collaborates with R&D leadership to assesses and execute on priority and resource reallocations.
• Provides context for business level objectives as well as product, engineering, and architectural decisions outside of the immediate team
Team Performance Development
• Assess and document individual employee performance.
• Meets with direct reports to discuss and coach in areas including, but not limited to: career development, assigned product development work, and issues or obstacle that they face. Address issues from 1:1s.
• Conducts skip-level meetings.
• Prioritizes and invests time into career growth for direct reports; includes identifying and providing opportunities related to their goals, as appropriate.
• Leads workforce planning and the recruiting process for the team.
• Assesses and manages team health, including employee engagement and conflict management
What You'll Need
Education
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Business, IT, or related discipline; commensurate experience is also accepted.
Skills & Qualifications
• Can quickly consume and understand business strategy and operating models; can apply gap analysis techniques to create long-term engineering and product value-add.
• Can ensure technical and social capabilities match business needs and goals.
• Can effectively communicate goals, metrics, and value propositions across the organization.
• Can expertly mentor guiding principles and standards to a team; while leading technical change and transformation.
• Can drive Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) standards and success criteria, so that expectations are met around high-quality, and consistent deliverables that delight customers.
• Can lead by example, with integrity, and drive results and accountability, while producing innovative solutions around company goals.
• Can perform quantitative and qualitative analysis around career development frameworks, methodologies, and models, to coach continual learning and growth strategies for employees.
• Can collaborate with Product Management and Engineering in the planning, execution, and delivery of existing and new Product Offerings.
• Can expertly bridge the gap between requirements and technical delivery – always focusing on outcomes, and not outputs.
• Must have knowledge around Object-Oriented Design & Analysis principles in Java and/or Python; as well as API, ORM, SOA, and SQL data store technologies.
• Must have knowledge of storage subsystems, networking, communication protocols, data-store technologies, cloud ecosystems, and distributed systems architecture.
• Must be able to lead engineers into various data stores to produce meaningful insights, operational intelligence, customer experience visualizations, and proactive trend analyses.
• Must be teachable, give and receive feedback, and demonstrate success in their discipline on a consistent and transparent basis.
• Must be passionate about creating solutions, and solving complex problems – in the right way, at the right time, and for the right reasons.
Experience
• 5+ years experience.
• Progressive experience in a product, engineering, development, or technical delivery position preferred.
Travel Requirements
• Typically requires no more than 15% travel.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
• Reliable Internet access while not working within a Workiva office.
How You'll Be Rewarded
Base Pay Range in Colorado: $145,000 - $206,000
A discretionary bonus typically paid annually
Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire
The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.
