Do you want to help build real technology for a meaningful purpose? Do you want to fight to make the world’s fresh produce healthier, tastier, and more sustainable?

As an Embedded Software Engineer at Tortuga, you’ll bring knowledge of hardware, firmware, and software to work on a variety of hardware interfaces and develop firmware to support our robot fleet. You’ll excel in either C or C++ (preferably both!) and have the opportunity to work on advanced, novel, and custom solutions to interesting and challenging on-farm robotic problems. Your work will span power systems, compute, sensor and motor interfaces, and interfaces with the software stack.

As an early employee at Tortuga, you’ll be fundamental to our success, growth, and culture. You’ll share a passion for our mission while also thriving in a fast-paced, flexible, and energized startup environment. You’re excited to advance your role and skills as Tortuga continues to grow.

What you’ll do

  • Integrate communications from hardware on custom PCBs of a variety of types (cameras, motor controllers, microcontrollers, etc.) to low level software interfaces

  • Write microcontroller code to support hardware interfaces and sensors

  • Debug communication bus, kernel level, and software level faults and handle these gracefully

  • Work closely with the hardware team to evaluate and implement new solutions

  • Create C++ wrappers to communicate with higher level software

  • Up to 10% travel, with potential for international travel

What we’re looking for

  • Required: 2-5 years professional experience in robotics, firmware, or integration

  • Required: Professional software development experience using C programming language, ideally on microcontrollers running an RTOS

  • Required: Some C++ and Python programming proficiency, and ideally prior knowledge of ROS

  • Required: B.S. Computer Engineering, Electrical engineering, or relevant degree

  • Startup experience a major plus
