About the Job

As the Director, Software Engineering for the Advertising team, you will lead the engineering and operational aspects for our Advertising products. You are responsible for providing technical thought leadership, interpreting and influencing business strategy, and managing requirements for developing these products. You’ll be responsible for clarifying deliverables, identifying bottlenecks in the process and eliminating roadblocks for your team so they can achieve more than they thought was possible. We believe in dedication, passion and personality.  We are seeking a leader who can manage diverse, talented, and motivated engineers while balancing personnel challenges with business requirements. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Coach, develop, and lead multiple full-stack engineering teams working on high volume, highly available, business-critical systems
  • Partner with product managers to develop short-term and long-term product vision and roadmap
  • Understand and communicate the business domain, and how it affects requirement and implementation details
  • Manage key engineering metrics such as development cycle time, team velocity, software quality, and team morale 
  • Oversee the department operating budget to ensure business goals are met with the greatest efficiency
  • Empower engineering teams and leaders to drive standards, ensure code quality and foster a culture of strong engineering design, delivery and quality
  • Spot, attract, and retain top-tier engineering talent
  • Provide strategic direction, development oversight, and performance accountability for Sovrn’s Advertising systems
  • Collaborate with Sovrn executives, geographically distributed, world-class engineers, data scientists, and product managers to define the long-term strategy of our Advertising business.
  • Ensuring you have the right team structure and development processes that drive consistent engineering practices while providing technical leadership and mentorship on complex and high-priority technology projects.
  • Take calculated risks and make quick decisions
  • Work with other engineering leaders to continuously improve the overall development processes.
  • Break down a full project plan into incremental deliveries, and track the team’s work against those steps.

About You

A successful candidate will have: 

  • Engineering management and mentorship of 1 - 2 full-stack, agile engineering teams
  • Experience building and leading, full-stack engineering teams
  • Experience with developing or delivering web services and applications
  • Proven ability to manage and resolve complex technical issues
  • Experience with Scrum and Agile development processes
  • Excel in a fast-paced agile development environment
  • Passion and drive to help the team improve and deliver great products.
  • Active listening and respect for others opinions and ideas.
  • You are technical enough to understand the products and what the team is doing.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or a related field; or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working closely with Product Management and Creative teams to design new features and empower the engineering teams to develop them.
  • Responsible for hiring, on-boarding and mentoring a diverse team of engineers.
  • Experience in architecting and operating a suite of software products, maturing DevOps constructs for automation, and ensuring production reliability.  

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, or another cloud platform.
  • Experience working with remote engineering teams geographically distributed across the world
  • Software development experience working with a static typed language such as Java or C++
  • Experience building, operating, and scaling high performance, highly transactional systems
  • Experience building and operating SaaS web applications

Compensation and Benefits

In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the approximate compensation range for this role in Boulder, Colorado is $180,000 to $220,000, including base salary and any related bonuses or commissions. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills, certifications and geographic location.
