Your Mission

Create a world-class technical operations team to assist in establishing Pie as the preeminent commercial insurer by ensuring small business owners have an amazing experience while using our platform.

How You’ll Do It

As the Director of Platform Engineering you own architecture and the operations of all production and internal IT systems. You’ll work across the technology organization to create world class deployment and monitoring solutions. Your work is absolutely critical to our collective ability to build, automate and streamline operations and processes across Pie.

You should enjoy rapid problem-solving and have a passion for building technology to support automated and efficient processes. You and your team will always put the customer at the center of any technology decision. Technology leadership is essential to this role, but you must be able to implement with the best.

Pie’s Engineering team works out of both Denver and DC, but don’t let the geographical divide fool you. This incredibly collaborative team is in tight, constant communication as we design, deploy, operate and support our systems.

Whether It’s Right For You

Are you excited by the challenge of solving large-scale problems through innovative engineering and project management? Do you enjoy solving complex challenges in AWS? A fast-paced, collaborative, and creative environment? We’re looking for an influential engineering leader to provide strategic direction on initiatives with significant business impact.

This role provides a considerable opportunity for ingenuity, as this individual will work as a key leader of an exceptionally talented engineering team, to deliver cutting edge innovation at scale.

We are looking for an independent thinker who makes convincing, evidence-based decisions. The ideal candidate will devise clear roadmaps to innovation and is comfortable thinking strategically and diving deep; a vanguard leader who can identify opportunities and leverage the team to translate them into live solutions that are used by Pie’s ever growing customer base.

You will be leading our Platform Engineering team in our Denver office. The impact of our Platform Engineering work is significant for our customer experience and success as a whole. That means we need you to be an incredibly hands-on problem solver who can work under pressure, especially when fires are burning.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Director level person to lead others.

Of course, you’ll also need certain skills and abilities to do the work:

  • 10+ years as a DevOps Engineer or Architect
  • 3 + years experience building and leading a team in a development and a rapid paced environment
  • The ability to seed and extend innovation into the greater organization to develop key talent, consistent with that of a leading technology company
  • Exceptional management abilities to manage a team and deliver technology prototypes in support of business assessment.
  • Technical Leadership and the ability to inspire your teammates to deliver quality software solutions
  • Recruit, motivate, mentor, and lead the best application engineering talent.
  • Innovative thinking with a passion for problem-solving
  • Ensure adherence to continuous improvement practices as required to meet quality and time to market imperatives
  • Visualize ideas and concepts to communicate them in an effective and compelling way for internal leaders, partners, and customers
  • Great attitude, team player and energy amplifier. Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and technologies
  • Deep experience with AWS required, an AWS certification is strongly preferred
  • Experience with a CI/CD environment and associated tools
  • Experience with containers and container orchestration

The following behaviors or competencies will ensure you thrive in our culture:

  • You proactively bring issues and recommended solutions to your leaders.
  • You take ownership and want your work product to be better than yourself.
  • You want to bring success to our customers and to Pie.
  • You work hard to deliver for your clients with an incredible sense of urgency. Their experience with Pie hinges on your execution.
  • Expect to share your ideas, to challenge others, and to be challenged.
  • Your communication style is candid yet compassionate. In a startup with limited resources we need to communicate and work as quickly and effectively as possible.
  • You share your knowledge in ways that position the team for exponential growth. We aren’t here to compete with one another; we are in it to win it, together.
  • You share our passion for the small business community.

Why Pie

Small business owners today pay too much for commercial insurance. In fact, according to our data, 80% small businesses overpay for workers’ compensation by up to 30%. That’s an expensive problem.

Leveraging data analytics and an online shopping experience, Pie makes workers’ compensation less expensive, less complicated, and more transparent. Easy as pie, in fact. We are disrupting the small business insurance market, one customer at a time.

Founded in 2017, Pie is a fast-growing startup with home offices in Washington, DC, and Denver, CO. Our all-star team launched Pie’s workers’ compensation product, backed by Sirius Group, a trusted global insurer, in Illinois and Georgia in March 2018. We have continued to expand in new states and are scaling our team and operations.

Pie offers an incredible career opportunity where you can use your expertise to disrupt an industry and serve the SMB community.

Want a slice? In return for your commitment to us, you’ll get a piece of Pie in the form of stock options. At Pie, we’re invested in you, and you in us.
