The Director of Engineering for Explorer Surgical is responsible for the day-to-day management of technical development teams working on the Explorer Live product. The Explorer Live product is built on video streaming technology to close the gap of access to expertise in the operating room. Working closely with product and other business unit leaders, this role executes the company's technical, architectural, and commercial product initiatives. The role involves both software and hardware technical details as well as people management including mentoring and career guidance. Responsibilities

  • Oversee all software development within the Explorer Surgical domain
  • Coordinate with Product, Operations, Customer Support and other business leaders
  • Manage hardware vendors and coordinate hardware and software timelines
  • Establish highly effective software engineering teams based on agile and product principles
  • Manage off-shore teams and contractors
  • Measure business impact of delivered software
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with internal and external user base
  • Remove obstacles for the business and engineering teams
  • Work with the larger GHX organization to find and build out product synergies
  • Communicate with stakeholders about process, goals, and process
  • Organize and manage objectives and key results (OKRs) for the technical teams.
  • Evangelize state of the art practices for software product development and delivery
  • Meet audit, compliance, and availability standards
  • Participate in occasional department-wide special projects
  • Manage, coordinate, and help reduce technical dependencies between teams
  • Hire, train, guide, and coach team members
  • Assist the business to identify additional business value of the enabling technology
  • Assess risks and dependencies and identify mitigation strategies
  • Coordinate incident response, including coverage and technical response to issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

  • Conversant in Russian and fluent in English (preferred but not required)
  • A focus on customer first development
  • Engineering background, including ability to understand technical architecture and implementation at code level
  • Understanding the principles and application of the Agile Manifesto
  • Understanding of modern, state of the art DevOps and QA strategies
  • Understanding of the writings of Marty Cagan and/or Teresa Torres for Product Management
  • Understanding of agile development methodologies and the value therein
  • Effective communication across organizational levels and with a variety of stakeholders, including non-technical audiences
  • Manage development projects from inception to launch
  • Strategic thinking and business awareness
  • Adaptable to changing conditions and can lead others through change
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects
  • Decision making in difficult situations and the ability to follow through
  • Effectively explain impacts of decisions to the product, team, and organization

Required Experience

  • Computer Science or related degree, or a combination of education and related experience.
  • 5+ years of commercial software development experience
  • 3+ years of prior software development management experience
  • Experience in healthcare
  • Experience leading teams with agile, iterative discovery, and rapid delivery
  • Experience working with multiple international development team (e.g., internal remote offices or outsourcing partners)
  • Experience implementing and improving agile development principles.
  • Experience and ability to lead and mentor a team of software engineers building applications using ReactJS, NodeJS, Express, Docker, IOS Native extensions, Android Native Extensions
  • Experience with hardware vendors
  • Experience with AWS services and Infrastructure as Code

Preferred Experience

  • System engineering with both hardware and software
  • Managing teams in robotics, or similar field
  • Strong time with Apple IOS and Windows mobile devices
  • Building apps with ReactJS and Nodejs as well as mobile apps (Android, iOS)
  • Working with Russian speaking teams and teams from India
  • Delivering solutions for use in a hospital operating room
  • Track record of closing the gap between development and operation teams.
  • Lean and/or six sigma training and experience

Estimated Salary Range for this position: $169,050 - $205,050The base salary range represents the anticipated low and high end of the GHX's salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and will be based on various factors, such as candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies and proficiency for the role. The base salary is one component of GHX's total compensation package for employees.
