Director of Engineering

We are looking for passionate technical leader to step in as a Director of Engineering as we head into 2021 focused on building for scale and competitive advantage. In this role, you will lead engineers across the stack and directly manage Lead Software Engineers–reinforcing a culture of high performance, innovation and collaboration. You'll demonstrate your technical expertise and commitment to talent development daily, inspiring team members to achieve and coaching them through challenges and complexity. As a cross-functional partner to senior leaders around the company, you'll dive into the business context and become an expert on our product as you participate in strategic planning and translate the big picture into a clear technical roadmap and goals to set your teams up to succeed.
Here's what you'll do:
- Lead a team of 20 to 30 engineers and directly manage 3 to 5 Lead Software Engineers
- Actively manage and coach your direct reports and build their leadership capabilities through continuous feedback, reviews, and mentorship
- Hire, engage, and retain talented engineers across our stack– Ruby on Rails, React, Node.js–reinforcing Hotel Engine's reputation as a top technical team
- Inspire and role model collaboration, ownership, continuous learning, and high standards to your team, making sure to balance the hard work with moments of celebration and fun
- Take the lead on the evolution of our engineering practices to help move our business forward, ensuring clear standards are established and the team is trained and ready to deliver them
- Partner with our product team and lead engineers to execute the roadmap while advocating for the long-term health and maintainability of our codebase
- Identify and prioritize key engineering initiatives that will help us scale from an architectural and organizational view
Contribute to company long-term planning and effectively set expectations across the organization
Here's what we're looking for:
- 10+ years of experience in software engineering
- 5+ years managing engineers across multiple teams, including multi-layered teams
- Experience scaling software engineering teams through periods of rapid growth
- Experience building scalable systems, with expertise in OO, and system design
- Familiarity with our technical stack (Ruby on Rails, React, Node, PostgreSQL) is a plus
- Base compensation rage: $170,000 - $190,000
