Desktop Systems Engineer
Position Summary
Our Desktop Systems Engineering team manages the development, operation, and maintenance of enterprise client computing technologies deployed within MSU Denver, including System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Microsoft Intune, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, and Jamf Pro.
Reporting to the Desktop Systems Engineering Manager, you will join two other Systems Engineers focusing on architecting and engineering future solutions to refine and enhance support and services of our client computing environment used by all students, faculty, and staff of MSU Denver. You will be at home in this position if you are optimistic, creative, and motivated on developing solutions that applies to the mass. Duties/Responsibilities
40% Systems Administration
The Desktop Systems Engineer’s primary responsibility is the successful implementation of Systems Administration tasks, including but not limited to:
• Administration of enterprise desktop and asset management systems, including Microsoft Systems Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), Microsoft Intune, and Jamf.
• Development and testing of base system images for both Windows and Mac operating system platforms.
• Development and testing of application packages for distribution via existing systems management infrastructure.
• Develop and maintain accurate documentation regarding systems administration activities.
• Preparation, testing and deployment of scripted commands, installations and/or configuration changes related to workstation administration. Examples of scripting languages utilized may include: batch, shell, PowerShell, VB, Python or Perl or a currently-relevant programming language such as C, C#, Java, or Ruby.
20% Escalated Technical Support Delivery
• Utilize Footprints Incident Management system to track and update incidents and service requests.
• Serve as a Tier 3 escalation point for Windows and Mac desktop issues, assisting Tier 1 & 2 technicians with a range of complex technical issues.
• Perform root cause analysis on reported problems and provide strategic solutions.
20% Research and Development
• Perform in-depth research on technical solutions to existing business problems.
• Analyze requirements presented by user or peer population and propose practical solutions.
• Develop and implement comprehensive test protocols for candidate technologies.
• Complete formal system testing and report on successes or failures of candidate technologies.
• Provide recommendations to senior ITS leadership on viability of candidate solutions.
15% Project Management
• Perform structured requirements gathering and analysis to provide design and architectural recommendations.
• Develop project plans for implementation of recommended solutions.
• Independently execute project plans for assigned areas of responsibility.
• Prioritize work efforts, multi-task in a fast-paced environment and provide timely and clear updates.
• Update all assigned tickets while capturing troubleshooting activities and resolution.
• Prepare and deliver regular project status updates for an executive-level audience.
5% Other Tasks as Assigned
Includes, but not limited to:
• At the discretion of the Desktop Systems Engineering Manager, perform additional tasks and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university*
• 3+ years technical support experience
• Experience using, troubleshooting and supporting MS Windows desktop OS (windows 7 64-bit, Windows 10) and Microsoft Office Professional 2013/2016/365
- Candidates who have not attained a four-year degree may substitute eight years’ professional experience.
Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years technical support experience
• Experience working in an information technology environment in a higher education setting
• Experience using and supporting Mac desktop OS (10.10+)
• Experience using one or more of the following scripting languages: batch, shell, PowerShell, VB, Python or other relevant programming language such as C, C#, Java, or Ruby
• Experience in packaging and deploying of operating system, software applications, and application configurations
• Experience using SCCM, Intune, Jamf, or a combination thereof
• Experience using Citrix Virtual Apps or Desktops
