About Urban Sky:

Urban Sky is revolutionizing the earth observation industry. We’re a small, venture-backed, stealth start-up based in Denver, CO that's pioneering the utilization and exploration of the stratosphere. We've developed the first ever reusable stratospheric balloon, a new category of aerial vehicle we call the “Microballoon.” This small, reusable aerial vehicle is used to capture critical data about the Earth and our atmosphere. We're a small team of engineers, makers, hackers, and doers that believe in immense human potential when passion meets utility within a supportive team environment. We’re looking to build the next chapter of stratospheric history right here in Denver and are looking for a self-starting, hard worker with an open mind that's ready to take on larger than life problems with the potential to positively impact Earth and its inhabitants.

About the Role:

Urban Sky designs and builds stratospheric flight and sensor systems that collect a range of high-resolution data products over broad areas. Our data products range from RGB aerial imagery to Long Wave Infrared data critical for wildfire monitoring applications.

For this role, we're seeking a passionate, hands-on designer and operations lead to design, build, test and launch small stratospheric test payloads and production sensor systems to extreme high altitudes in the field. This dynamic, hybrid position includes two important roles and responsibilities, split generally 50/50 in terms of your time. The first of those roles is as a design engineer capable of designing complex, small spacecraft assemblies in a 3D modeling environment and analyzing those systems for performance in extreme environments. The second role involves leading the team responsible for launch and recovery of stratospheric flight systems in the field. You'll actively participate in and lead all missions, from launch planning to recovery. Both roles require a diligent, detail-oriented, process-driven technically minded person with scrappy, real-world ingenuity and know-how. Any applicant for this role should be a hands-on engineer with a desire to lead, and a desire to test in the field with their team.

Desired Qualifications

We're a scrappy, lean, small team (so don't expect corporate bureaucracy, lots of oversight, and fancy offices), but that's also what makes us unique at this stage of growth. This is an exciting opportunity to join a deep-tech aerospace start-up attempting to broaden access to a relatively untapped layer of Earth’s atmosphere for commercial and scientific purposes. We're an experienced entrepreneurial team that knows how to build and grow companies and technology. If you think this journey could be both inspirational and fulfilling for you (as it is for us), we're excited to hear from you.

Urban Sky is an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity. All employment is decided on the basis of qualifications, merit and business need.
