The Cloud Operations team owns the strategy for provisioning, handling, maintaining, securing, and advocating Invitae’s public cloud infrastructure. We work daily among ourselves and by partnering with multi-functional teams to improve and enhance Invitae’s public cloud, as well as the tooling for developer interaction. This is a hands-on role. As a Cloud Operations Engineer, you will:

  • Work with emerging cloud technologies, taking advantage of a growing set of cloud services to assist the business in running critically important applications, and contribute to our mission of bringing genetics to mainstream medicine for billions of people.
  • Build and modernize a distributed, fault-tolerant, reliable, and reproducible cloud infrastructure according to best-practices by working with Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes, and other cloud-native tools, while striving to automate yourself out of a job.
  • With a customer service approach, act as domain specialist and provide mentorship to and partnership with multi-functional teams around all aspects of the cloud, including but not limited to: systems architecture, networking, security, identity and access management (IAM), data retention, backups / disaster recovery, and secrets management.
  • Evangelize and assist with standardization across our entire cloud footprint, helping champion our “paved path” for application deployment and system design.
  • Provide PR review and architectural design guidance for developer created Terraform PRs in our centralized Terraform monorepo.
  • Respond to tickets in our service desk to provide operational assistance for customer requests, with the goal of removing toil and streamlining the process with automation, enabling Cloud Operations to focus on more project work and fewer request-based tasks.
  • Assist in integrating cloud environments and systems from mergers and acquisitions from other AWS accounts or other public clouds.
  • Act as a point of escalation for the other members of the team, providing assistance and training where necessary.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation and perform additional duties, as assigned.

We look for employees who:

  • Typically has 5+ years of relevant work experience or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities 
  • Have a deep understanding of at least one programming language
  • Have an extensive understanding of AWS applications and principles
  • Are experts in Terraform, performing complex operations like writing and overhauling modules, combining states, and understanding the complexities of Terraform and other HashiCorp tools like Vault and Consul
  • Have experience with Docker and container orchestration tools like Kubernetes, AWS ECS, and Rancher
  • Have worked with various software supply chain systems like Jenkins, GitHub Actions, and TravisCI
  • Are passionate lifelong learners, always pushing themselves, their teammates, and their systems to be the best they can be
  • Have proven analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills with a track record in gathering, detailing, and surpassing business requirements
  • Are self-starters and can work towards a larger goal with minimal guidance
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience with Azure, GCP, Okta, and Cloud Native tools (Kubernetes, Helm, Prometheus)
  • Experience designing and architecting various software systems
  • Proven experience migrating environments between AWS accounts or various public clouds
  • Experience with database administration, performance improvement, query optimization, etc., preferably PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with compliance and risk management methodologies, frameworks, and principles (e.g. HIPAA, SOX, NIST, CSA, ITIL, etc.)

This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and location.
