About Boom Supersonic

Boom Supersonic is the Denver-based startup building Mach-2.2 passenger airliners. Think Concorde but 75% more affordable to fly. Imagine a day trip from New York to London—3h15 each way. Fly to London for a business meeting and be home in time to tuck your children into bed. Boom's first prototype will rollout by summer of 2020.

Boom’s outstanding team comes from places like Amazon, SpaceX, Scaled Composites, and Virgin Galactic. Team members have collectively contributed to 40+ new air and space vehicles, including the Falcon 9, Virgin SpaceShipTwo, and the Joint Strike Fighter.

The company is backed by venture capital firms including Emerson Collective, Y Combinator, Caffeinated Capital, and SV Angel as well as individuals including Sam Altman, Paul Graham, Ron Conway, Michael Marks, and Greg McAdoo.

At Boom, you’ll have world-class colleagues and a flexible work environment. We don’t punch a clock, offer unmetered vacation time, and value our employees’ comprehensive well-being.

Are you passionate about building the future of transportation? Help us make aviation history.

Role Overview:

Boom Supersonic is seeking an acoustic engineer with an extensive background in the prediction and validation of landing and take-off (LTO) noise levels for commercial aircraft. Working closely with aerodynamic and structural analysts, the acoustics engineer will provide preliminary and detailed acoustic analysis of Boom’s commercial supersonic airliner to establish projected lateral, flyover, and approach noise levels, and the associated community noise footprint. This individual will participate in the ICAO CAEP Working Group 1 meetings to ensure future regulations are informed by accurate and relevant technical data

Key Activities Include:

-Operate simulation tools, and/or advise others in the operation of those tools, that produce acoustics data.

-Perform acoustic analyses (source data coming from either simulation or experiment) on aircraft systems and components, including building analysis tools and scripts.

-Develop testing plans for technology development and verification of a design.

-Implement sub-and full-scale testing plans and perform data reduction to verify analytical performance predictions.

-Perform trade studies on both configurational and operational changes to reduce noise levels.

-Present detailed data and design recommendations based on findings.

-Prediction of near-field acoustic energy levels in support of structural design and analysis.

-Travel may be required, up to 10%.

Must Have:

-Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering with 5 years of applicable experience.

-Experience with computational acoustic analysis techniques, with a strong preference for experience with ANOPP (or ANOPP2)

-Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computational aeroacoustics (CAA), and acoustic ray tracing methods.

-Experience with generating and assessing airport noise contours, preferably with experience using the FAA’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT).

-Experience with modeling sonic boom propagation and loudness assessment

-Experience with aeroacoustics (e.g., airframe noise, acoustics) with emphasis on supersonic flight and the relationships to aerodynamic acoustic analogies.

-Experience in validation of analysis results against other sources, such as test data, previously published literature, and theoretical source models.

-Acoustic measurement skills, are fluent in data analysis methodology, and have experience making measurements in anechoic/hemi-anechoic chambers/tunnels.

-Experience with testing standards, instrumentation, signal conditioning, verifying boundary & environmental conditions

-Understanding of acoustic treatment packages.

Preferred:

-PhD in Aerospace Engineering.

-Experience in the prediction of sonic boom signatures via CFD and reduced-order methods.

-Prior experience in the certification process for aircraft noise. Current DER status is highly desired.

-Present or prior involvement in ICAO CAEP Working Group 1 (Aircraft Noise).

-Knowledge of current state-of-the-art acoustic technologies and technologies under development

To conform to U.S. Government aerospace technology export regulations (ITAR and EAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
