Overview:

As a key member of the UX team, the Team Lead for User Experience Research will act as an advocate for our customers and/or end users. Your primary job will be to drive, mentor, and execute with a team of highly skilled UX researchers to help deliver a world-class user experience throughout our products and organization.

As team lead for UX Research, you are responsible for overseeing the global Research team which in turn supports the UX efforts for Alteryx’s products and features. As the leader of this team, you will help drive the future of UX at Alteryx. This role manages a team of researchers, fosters relationships with other departments, guides communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution, furthers product knowledge, and helps nurture the career growth of the team.

You should be passionate about uncovering customer behavior, needs, goals, and motivations to inform the design and innovation of products and services. The role requires strong problem-solving skills, independent self-direction, and an aptitude for team collaboration and open communication. You should have experience in fast-paced and innovative environments and be comfortable with ambiguity. A thorough understanding and previous experience in both qualitative and quantitative user-centered design research methodologies is a must.

Position Overview

  • Plan and execute user research throughout the design and development lifecycle, from early strategic direction through post-release validation.

  • Use contextual inquiry, participatory design workshops, interviews, formative and summative usability testing, surveys, ethnography, and usage analytics to drive design innovation.

  • Evangelizing qualitative and quantitative design research (value, impact, and process) throughout the company.

  • Ability to drive forward the UX team’s vision with little guidance.

  • Collaborate with product managers, developers, and UX Designers to estimate scope, adjust priorities, guide, and implement designs through research.

  • Mentoring teammates to help raise the team's strengths in all areas, including UX research best practices, product domain knowledge, and process strategies.

  • Participate in product ideation and conceptual development to assess where research can be best implemented to support efforts.

  • Translating business and customer insights to inform concept generation, product and business requirements, design updates, and market strategy.

Leadership

  • Collaborating with UX leadership to communicate and drive the vision and strategy for the UX team across global offices.

  • Oversees and ensures coordinated research quality across multiple related products.

  • Understands the competitive UX landscape, customers, and non-customers.

  • Leverage telemetry and other business data to understand UX/UI performance against product KPIs, presenting key findings and adjustments to push innovation.

Execution

  • Manages a team of researchers, who are responsible for measuring and validating all areas of the experience, including interactive prototypes, and visual design mock-ups that translate business needs and user stories into intuitive and engaging experiences.

  • Collaborates with product managers and developers to estimate scope for multiple projects, then balances team bandwidth to set research timelines that meet the needs of the release schedule.

  • Works closely with the product development teams to guide the implementation and iteration of designs and verifies that the final deliverables provide a quality user experience

  • Fosters the development of UX initiatives across the organization

  • Works with Product Managers to share successes and drive the overall effectiveness of processes and work priorities used by the UX department.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s Degree in HCI, Interaction Design, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Statistics, or a related field.

  • 4-6 years of related work experience.

  • Proven ability to translate abstract ideas into actionable, solution-oriented frameworks.

  • Strong client-facing presentation and speaking skills.

  • Strong understanding of common software development practices.

  • Previous experience managing teams.

  • History of personnel management and track record of career development.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Project management skills; problem-solving skills and strategic thinking.

  • A strong sense of teamwork and an ability to influence at all levels.

  • Knowledge of lean process, iterative design, and industry-standard methodologies when designing software and applications for desktop or web.

Compensation:

Alteryx is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The salary range for this role in Broomfield is $88,400 - $150,300. This position is also remote-friendly and, as such, compensation will ultimately be in line with the location in which the position is filled. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. 

This role is eligible for variable compensation including bonus and stock grants.
