We are The Motley Fool, a purpose-driven financial services firm with nearly 30 years of expertise. Our goal is to make the world smarter, happier, andricher by providing outstanding business and investing advice, at scale. But what does that even mean?! It means we’re helping Fools (always with a capital “F”) demystify the world of finance, beat the stock market, and achieve personal wealth and happiness through our investing services, like Stock Advisor, and Motley Fool Wealth Management, our portfolio management service.

What does this team do?

Our top-tier team of talented UI/UX designers work to make sure that our suite of premium product websites are responsive, accessible, and Foolish. Along with a team of frontend developers, you'll touch almost every part of the visual experience of our website, which operates at a huge scale of millions of users for Fool.com and over 750k subscribers for our premium sites.  We are looking for people with solid hands-on work experience building beautiful, fast, and functional websites. You have a strong design eye, an ability to visually communicate ideas, and the technical chops to show what you’ve envisioned

What would you do in this role?

As a Senior UX Designer you will be a driving creative force behind the design for Fool.com and related Fool Premium website experiences. You’ll use your keen design eye to create mockups and deliver value to stakeholders. Our design system isn’t set in stone yet — this role will provide you with the exciting opportunity to be a part of shaping and building out our future design system and strategy.

But what does this role actually do?

  • Work with fellow designers to convert product ideas into low-fidelity wireframes for feedback and testing.
  • Leverage components in the pattern library and create high-fidelity mockups across different screen-sizes for further testing and development.
  • Communicate the design decisions you’ve made, why you’ve made them, and ideally backing up those decisions with qualitative or quantitative data.
  • Abstract reusable new design patterns and code components into shared items in Storybook and the Component Library.

We’d love to work with you if:

  • You design solutions: You hear the description of a user need or a product opportunity and can start sketching out how that could work. That you aren’t afraid to suggest approaches and then dive in to create them. You know when to go looking for input from others, and are constantly looking for ways to improve our user experience.

  • You are open to pivoting to solutions that better meet our user’s specific needs.  You love getting user feedback and see it as a chance to enhance your designs so that they are more usable.  You understand that user research can be a sort of visual editing that can help you learn, grow, and better serve our customers.

  • You pay attention to detail: Missed details erode consistency, makes users think,  when we are aiming to build trust in our advice for how to invest their hard-earned savings. You actively pull in other team members to review your work and understand the value of thinking through each step in the user flow.
  • You love form and function. You know good design isn’t about bells and whistles.  It’s about making a workable solution that meets the member’s needs.

  • You’re curious and love to learn: Whether it’s the latest technology, how the Foolish business operates, or an interest in investing for yourself (huge bonus!); you have an insatiable appetite for knowledge. And, you love to share, engage and collaborate with your teammates.

  • You take pride in your work: The thought of a customer being lost in a product you designed makes you cringe. Hearing criticism in a user test actually makes you grateful to make the tool even better. You want to ensure that every customer has a great experience with The Motley Fool because of what you build.

What do you need to apply?

  • 5+ years of experience in UI/UX design and web development outside of a coding bootcamp or college program.
  • A clear understanding of UI design patterns, responsive web design, and web accessibility.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely communicate with your peers.
  • Experience working on projects with multiple designers, developers, and stakeholders.
  • A desire to work with a fun, growing team of developers and design professionals.
  • A passion for or interest in investing - even better if you are familiar with the Fool's products or have been a subscriber to any of our sites!
  • If you have one, show us your online portfolio and share about the impact it has made. We look forward to seeing it!

It’s even better if you have…

  • Formal design training i.e. BA/BFA (or equivalent experience) in Visual Communication, HCI or a related field is a plus.
  • Ability to work with front-end website frameworks – Bootstrap
  • Ability to work with a javascript environment - Vue.js
  • Ability to work in a Python environment - Django
  • Ability to work with image authoring tools – Sketch
  • Familiarity with the opportunities and limitations of web typography.
  • Familiarity with vector graphics and iconography.
  • Familiarity with code versioning tool – Git

The Motley Fool is firmly committed to diversity, inclusion, and equity. We are a motley group of overachievers that have built a culture of trust founded on Foolishness, fun, and a commitment to making the world smarter, happier and richer.  However you identify or whatever winding road has led you to us, please don't hesitate to apply if the description above leaves you thinking, "Hey! I could do that!"
