We are seeking a Product Designer to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and the planet.
We will consider this role for continued remote work with some work/travel to our offices in Denver, Boulder, Boston, Chicago or Vancouver.
What you get to do:This role is part of our Product Design team, which works to create software and services that help utility companies and their customers save energy and move to models that reduce fossil fuel use.The Product Design team at Uplight sees no boundary between form and function. They are multi-skilled, proactive communicators who develop a deep-understanding of the problem space. They help drive measurable energy savings with a focus on the end user.
By designing products that reach millions of people, you'll have an impact on creating a more sustainable future. Our products span the digital and non-digital ecosystems: mobile, web and email, print. You'll design elegant, simple, and impactful solutions that help people find energy-saving programs for them, their homes, and their businesses.
You'll work closely with other Product Designers, Content Strategists, Behavioral Scientists, Product Managers, Software Engineers, and Product Marketing Managers to research, concept, design, prototype, test, and iterate products to measurably help people meet their energy-savings goals.
Climate change is one of the biggest systemic problems humanity has ever faced. To tackle it, you need to be eager to solve problems and have a proven ability to create effective experiences based on research, testing, and sound design principles.
Be a strong advocate for end users in the product line from building a deep understanding of users and their needs on individual products and features.

  • Effectively communicate conceptual ideas and detailed design rationale both verbally and visually to internal stakeholders and to clients.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders (Product Managers, Engineers, and other Implementation team members) to ensure the designs can be effectively implemented at scale in conjunction with end-user requirements and/or business needs.
  • Translate open-ended requirements into feature designs, digging deeper into stakeholder and user discovery where more clarity is needed.
  • From sketch to user testing to launch - design feature sets related to the participation in utility programs, solving problems like depicting energy usage over time, visualizing financial savings, and educating customers on smart devices - to name a few.
  • Collaborate with other Product Designers, Content Strategists, and Behavioral Scientists across product lines to improve and standardize Design Team processes.
  • Build functional prototypes to validate and test designs.
  • Leveraging the Uplight UI Design System, create simple, elegant, data-driven, and user-centric experiences that delight users across our white-label products.
  • Maintain and update existing product visual and content assets for utility clients.
  • Look for opportunities to solve problems in unique and innovative ways.
  • Develop and maintain product configuration guide(s) communicating configurable elements of Uplight products.
  • Perform visual & functional QA of products and provide detailed feedback.


What you bring to Uplight:

  • Experience
    • 2-5 years of related experience

    • Build productive working relationships with key internal stakeholders across discipline (and some external utility client stakeholders as needed).
    • An attitude 'in service of your audience' and finding ways to understand their needs and validate solutions in service of those needs.
    • An ability to think beyond the pixels and design for the whole experience or service.
    • Proactively work towards project milestones and facilitate cross-functional design reviews.
    • Ability to collaborate and facilitate alignment across varying stakeholder groups.
    • Create research plans, run studies, sketch experience flows, design interactions, contribute to content strategy, and incorporate copy and visual design.
    • Consistently work on complex design projects requiring independent action and high degree of initiative to resolve issues.
    • Clear communication across verbal, written, live and asynchronous channels.
    • Experience with making complex services easily digestible for an audience.
    • Experience or desire to work in distributed/remote work environments.
    • Demonstrate commitment to Uplight core values and Design team principles.
    • Are growth-minded and well-versed in giving and receiving constructive feedback.
    • Clear understanding and advocacy for an iterative, people-first design process.


Bonus points:

  • Strong visual design skills - an understanding and skill for design principles such as composition, grid, typography, and color.
  • Experience applying and translating client brand guidelines and the ability to leverage an existing Design System.
  • Worked on white-label projects for multiple clients, from concept to implementation.
  • Experience with ADA WCAG accessibility standards and certification processes.
  • Experience working in an Agile and/or SaaS environment with Engineers and some background in Scrum/Kanban basic practices.
  • Participated in or led a Google Design Sprint.
  • A background in Product or Project Management, or Scrum Master training, that complements your Design background.

Salary Range: $75,000 to $90,000
In accordance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the approximate annual base compensation range is listed above. The actual offer, reflecting the total compensation package and benefits, will be determined by a number of factors including the applicant's experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity.
