Senior 2 Software Engineer - Big Data Engineer

Job Description

A Senior Big Data Engineer is part of a key team of Nordstrom Technology professionals that builds and supports Nordstrom’s enterprise Big Data platforms.Our mission is to deliver highly available enterprise scale Big Data platforms that amaze and delight our internal customers.We are looking for a senior DevOps engineer who will apply Site Reliability Engineering principles to ship code daily to our AWS infrastructure with our CI/CD pipeline.

In this role, you will work closely with the engineering team, program manager, and product owner to design, build, and support Nordstrom’s Big Data platforms.You will have to balance the responsibilities of laying down code, designing end-to-end solutions, and mentoring peer engineers.You will be responsible for understanding and maintaining our current Big Data platforms as well as defining and delivering our shared vision of what Nordstrom’s Big Data platforms ought to be.

A day in the life…

• Support enterprise Big Data platforms in AWS including EMR, Presto, Spark, and Ranger

• Strongly influence our team’s application architecture, coding standards, and quality of service monitoring

• Deploy AWS resources and code changes with our CI/CD pipeline using GitLab, Java, Python, and Terraform

• Live and breathe infrastructure as code in a DevOps team following SRE principles

• Complete peer code reviews, cross-train team members, and document what cannot be automated

• Participate in periodic team on call rotations supporting all our Big Data platforms

You own this if you have:

• 5+ years of experience with Big Data solutions such as EMR, Presto, Spark, and Hadoop

• 5+ years of experience programming with general purpose languages such as Java, Python, or Go and scripting languages such as Unix Shell, Bash, and PowerShell

• 5+ years of experience with AWS

• Experience with Git, CI/CD tools, and automation practices

• Experience with enterprise logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions such as Splunk, New Relic, and PagerDuty

• Familiar with Kafka, Containers, Terraform, Ranger, and NiFi

• Bachelor's or Master’s in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent
