Description

The Position

Do you dream about creating a more sustainable future? At Uplight, we are motivating energy users and providers to accelerate the clean energy ecosystem. We’re working with over 90 of the world’s leading electric and gas utilities to provide a personalized end-to-end customer energy experience that helps meet and accelerate carbon reduction goals. We are a certified B Corp, enabling us to put our values into action by not only making decisions for the benefit of our shareholders, but also for our customers, environment, employees, and community.

We are seeking an experienced data engineer to join our team and help us achieve our ambitious goals for our business and for the planet.

What you get to do:

We are searching for a Data Engineer who is passionate about our customers and new incubation offerings as we build a new foundation for the clean energy software ecosystem. You’ll work inside Step Change Labs (Uplight’s innovation and incubation arm) in close partnership with our Chief Innovation Officer and product teams to guide creation of our data needs for our new product offerings. Your primary focus will be the creation of data loading scripts, data pipelines, and architecting data storage solutions that can serve the needs of our API platform and applications being built within Step Change Labs. And you’ll work on a great team, dedicated to building the next generation of ideas in the energy ecosystem.

What you will contribute:

  • Be excited to work with talented, committed people in a fast-paced environment
  • Be passionate about reducing society’s carbon footprint and making a difference in the world
  • Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture, supporting the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products.
  • Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and cloud ‘big data’ technologies.
  • Build analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
  • Keep our data separated and secure across national boundaries through multiple domains
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
  • Work with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
  • Have excellent detailed written and verbal communication skills, possibly including some user interface documentation skills
  • Have excellent teamwork and collaboration skills especially with people less skilled in communication.
  • See our customers as a means to change the business and the world around you, as opposed to the end in itself
  • Love talking to your users

What you bring to Uplight:

  • 5+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role, who has attained a degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.
  • Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
  • Experience building and optimizing cloud ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
  • Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management.
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable ‘big data’ data stores.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
  • Familiarity with source control technologies such as git.

Bonus Points:

  • Affinity for technology and how it can help you in your job
  • High energy and aptitude for learning new things
  • History of success in highly visible roles
  • Experience in a technology company

Have subject matter expertise in the areas of electric vehicles or new energy paradigms and how to develop solutions for this market
