We are a small, quickly growing, fully remote tech startup. Working as a distributed team allows us to hire the best talent regardless of location (right now, everyone works in a continental US Time Zone). We are currently scaling out our Data Science team and seeking our first Data Scientist to help develop our next generation business applications. We are looking for a Data Scientist proficient in developing prototypes and applying Machine Learning frameworks to exciting business problems.  

The team is currently looking at a range of different business problems, using techniques from diverse domains such as data mining and machine learning, statistical modeling, simulation, optimization, NLP, and multimedia analysis. 

You will have a decision-making role within the team, researching new algorithms, looking at best papers published at top international conferences, journals, etc and developing prototypes to be handed over to engineering for production.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, and prototype robust and scalable models based on machine learning, data mining, and statistical modeling to answer key business problems
  • Build tools and support structures needed to analyze data, perform elements of data cleaning, feature selection and feature engineering and organize experiments in conjunction with best practices
  • Work interdepartmentally with development teams and business groups to ensure models can be implemented as part of a delivered solution replicable across both product and internal BI solutions
  • Present findings to stakeholders to drive improvements and solutions from concept through to delivery
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in the field by continuous learning and proactively champion promising new methods relevant to the problems at hand

Who you are

  • A few years in applied machine learning in commercial settings
  • Experience in researching algorithms, and pragmatically deciding between implementing custom frameworks vs using off the shelf solutions dependent on business needs
  • Experience working with decision trees/and random forests, gradient boosting, clustering, probability networks, association rules, and neural networksAbility to explain machine learning from first principles for a lay audience
  • Ability and inclination to work in multi-disciplinary environments, and desire to see ideas realized in practice
  • An avid problem solver, with the ideals for breaking existing boundaries
  • Experience programming in multiple languages (ideally Python and/or R)
  • Strong SQL experience
  • Experience with cloud computing and data warehousing 
  • Background of using agile development
  • (Nice to have) Educated to Masters/PhD level  in Mathematics, Computer Science, a relevant field AND/OR equivalent real-world experience
