As the senior most leader within IT, the CIO is accountable to establish and execute an organization-wide technology strategy that aligns with the organization’s business strategy. As a member of the Toastmasters International (TI) World Headquarters (WHQ) Senior Leadership Team, the CIO participates in and contributes to business strategy development working with the TI WHQ Leadership Team, the CEO, as well as the Board of Directors.

The CIO brings a balance of relevant experience and future vision leveraging next-generation information and technology to shape business model design, capability performance re-engineering, product and service development, and support for developing a competitive advantage.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establishes active relationships with TI WHQ Senior Leadership Team executives, business unit leaders, and members of their teams. Contributes as a business executive. Acts as a trusted advisor to ensure all executive leaders can, with the CIO, make confident decisions about the application of information and technology (I&T) within their units and across the enterprise.
  • Ensures I&T capabilities are delivered reliably, sustainably, cost effectively, and securely. Ensures the IT contributions are delivered with agility based on changing business objectives, goals, and strategies.
  • In support of the enterprise mission, determines the appropriate operating model for information and technology to foster business-oriented and digital-ready culture, mindsets, and practices.
  • Contributes actively to enterprise strategy and business capability planning. Leads the development of the IT strategic plan, roadmap, and annual operating plan. Ensures integration with the enterprise’s strategic planning process, and the resulting business strategy and plans.
  • Directs the design and implementation of I&T operating model, organizational structure, and governance processes. Uses influencing and negotiation skills to create synergies across the enterprise to enable cost-effective and innovative shared solutions in achievement of business goals.
  • Boundlessly collaborates with Senior Leadership Team and other WHQ leaders to define and execute the digital business strategy. Participates in and contributes to the assessment of external digital opportunities and threats, and internal technology capabilities required to achieve desired competitive positioning. May present such information to the Board of Directors.
  • Maintains current knowledge of technology landscapes to provide direction on what emerging technologies should be leveraged.  The CIO provides strategic direction in the IT organization’s innovation efforts and role in experimenting with new technologies that take advantage of those opportunities that can enable the enterprise’s digital business strategy.
  • Provides strategic direction and oversight for the design, development, operation, and support of IT systems and programs that fulfill the needs of the business, including enterprise architecture management, application management, security and risk management, and infrastructure and operations support management.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining the annual operating expenses (OpEx) and capital expenditures (CapEx) budgets for IT to ensure the investment in technologies is consistent with the enterprise’s overall strategic objectives and is within plan.
  • Enhances IT’s capabilities by leveraging a multitude of resources, both internally and externally. Directs the development of the IT sourcing strategy and provides executive oversight for strategic vendor and partner relationship management.
  • Engages and works with HR and key stakeholders to map out scenarios for IT workforce transformations. Develops the IT workforce strategy and action plans that align with and enable the effective execution of business and IT strategies.
  • Partners with HR to continually look for leading-edge and innovative solutions to the recruitment, development, and retention of the IT workforce.
  • Develops and maintains an IT workforce with the appropriate mix of business acumen, technical skills, and competencies. Balances the need for growing the agility required to achieve digital business objectives, with ensuring the core IT functions are reliable, stable, and efficient.
  • Accountable for the development and execution of a digital workplace strategy that improves the digital dexterity of the workforce. Ensures employees have the tools and work environment to be more engaged, productive, and effective.
  • Participates and partners with the business leadership team to drive culture change in support of digital business transformation.
  • Serves on enterprise planning and policymaking committees. Drives the development of enterprise technology standards, governance processes and performance metrics to ensure IT delivers value to the enterprise. Manages risks through the effective design, delivery, and management of I&T capabilities for the enterprise.
  • Provides leadership, coaching and direction to the IT leadership team and staff.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree or equivalent work experience

Experience

  • 15 years or more of experience in either business areas or within IT.
  • Minimum five to seven years in leadership roles.
  • Experience in association management or with a membership organization a plus.
  • Preferably five or more years’ experience leading large, cross-functional teams or enterprise-wide programs, influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders effectively across the organization and within complex contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing strategic planning and optimizing organization design focused on driving business outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead large, complex and or transformational initiatives in dynamic environments and taking advantage of digital opportunities to innovate business models and enable the digitalization of the business.

  • Exceptional leadership skills with the ability to develop and communicate vision that inspires and motivates staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and instill confidence with peers and all key stakeholders.
  • Effective influencing and negotiation skills in an environment where resources may not be in direct control of this role.
  • Excellent analytical, strategic conceptual thinking, strategic planning and execution skills.
  • Strong business acumen, including industry, domain-specific knowledge of the enterprise and its business units.
  • Expertise in budget planning and financial management.
  • Deep understanding of current and emerging technologies and how other enterprises are employing them to drive digital business and how they may be applied to the enterprise to drive digital business.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a strategic people plan that ensures that the right people are in the right roles at the right time and that employees have the right skills, are highly engaged, and satisfied.
  • Ability to manage geographically diverse teams and overcome the culture clashes that may arise.
  • Ability to identify and leverage resources internally and externally to the enterprise to enhance capabilities that drive digital business.
  • Ability to drive organizational change and build capabilities that effectively balance the needs for continuously exploiting capabilities to optimize operational efficiency, with delivering innovative and agile IT solutions to enable the business to explore digital business opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain digital concepts and technologies to business leaders, and business concepts to the IT workforce.

Working Conditions

  • Travel required: Some travel is required to support enterprise needs; typically, 10-15% per year.
  • Domestic: 95% International: Infrequent
  • Telecommuting option: Approximately three office days to two work-from-home days

This position pays between $240,000/year and $260,000/year and is exempt.

This role will be working full-time in our office located at 9127 S. Jamaica St. Englewood, CO 80112. You will be working from home while the office is closed due to COVID-19. Permanent work authorization required.
