The Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated Data Science Intern to conduct data audits for high value clients. This internship offers hands-on experience in data discovery, quality assessment, and digital transformation efforts in the public sector, with a focus on machine learning and artificial intelligence applications.

The intern will work alongside Amini’s Barbados Program Manager and our highly qualified team of data science engineers to identify and document datasets, evaluate data readiness, and support the foundation for the development of machine learning and artificial intelligence applications in the public sector. 

The type of work you will be doing

• Assist with data audits and mapping exercises across selected ministries and departments
• Clean, structure, and analyse datasets to identify data quality and consistency issues
• Apply knowledge in LLMs and retrieval-based AI systems (e.g., RAG pipelines) to build intelligent, context-aware systems
• Explore and prototype applications of knowledge graphs and network analysis in real-world domains
• Work with large-scale datasets, including temporal, text, graph data etc
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and product teams to translate business challenges into data-driven solutions
• Communicate technical findings effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Document workflows and assist in creating impactful reports and presentations

What you will need

• Bachelors Degree in a relevant field (STEM, Data Science, Computer Science, Geospatial Science, Statistics,  IT, etc.) or a related field. (Or graduating within a year)
• Hands-on experience with Python and data science libraries (Pandas, NumPy, Scikit-learn, etc.)
• Experience with data cleaning, pre-processing, and ensuring data integrity across varied data sources
• Familiarity with ML frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras etc
• Understanding of LLMs, prompt engineering, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) methods
• Some familiarity or interest in knowledge graphs and network science
• Familiarity with open-source tools like HuggingFace Transformers, LangChain, vLLM, MCP or similar frameworks.
• Basic experience working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP) and Linux environments
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a globally distributed team.
• Interest in new technology, with critical thinking and a passion for cutting-edge data science algorithms,with a deep appreciation of the value and opportunities in predictive science and digital.
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills across all levels of seniority and multiple geographies.
• Ability to translate complex data into business oriented value.
• Proactive and Autonomous work ethic, capable of regularly dealing with ambiguity, complexity, and uncertainty
