This New Year, Be A Better Version Of Yourself

With full stomachs and joyful hearts, we have shut the door on 2013. Colorado made headlines with disastrous flooding, and the legalization of recreational marijuana along with same sex civil unions. For the last couple of weeks the media has saturated our minds with “top 10” lists, recapping top moments and trends. We take this time to personally reflect on our choices and how they’ve gotten us to where we stand.

The birth of a New Year forces us to pause and reflect on the ups and downs of the year past. We start to build goals for our future. We use this transitional time as an opportunity to reflect and analyze where we can improve ourselves. You may have already dusted off your gym shoes, or bought a new pack of nicotine patches.

Self-reflection is inevitable at this juncture. What’s most important is that you look from within and not from someone else’s perspective of ideal. Whether it’s positive or negative memories flood your mind, each moment has shaped the person that you’ve become. Don’t lose sight of what each experience has taught you.

The problem with making new years resolutions is that we can be setting ourselves up for failure. We are creatures of habit. It’s unreasonable to expect that we can make a 180-degree lifestyle change overnight. It is easier to fixate on the end goal, rather than the root of the issue. Maybe your vice is smoking, carbs or a past love. Going cold turkey is not the solution. As soon as you break a promise to yourself, you feel defeated and before you know it your back to the bad habits you were trying to kick. And let’s face it, if you can’t keep promises to yourself, who can you trust?

For a greater chance at success, try identifying the root of what you want to change. Is it your fear of letting go? Feeling vulnerable? Being alone or trying something new? Change can be scary thing, and is certainly easier said than done. So in 2014 try a new kind of resolution. Make this year about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. For some, that’s opening up to the possibility of love and for others it may be adrenaline-fueled adventure, like jumping out of a plane!

Whatever your resolutions for 2014 may be, make sure they come from a place of appreciation and love for yourself. Make changes to become who you want to be, not somebody else’s version of ideal. So, happy New Year from the Wishlist team. May your year be filled with adventure, time with your loved ones, and time for yourself!
