Making Space for Creativity

Creativity requires space.  That quiet time away to explore the unknown and think about what could be.

But too often we pull back. The room needed to pursue big ideas doesn't fit neatly into our hectic lives. Early mornings. Email. Meetings. More meetings. Big deadlines. Later nights. We find ourselves squeezing big thinking between the cracks.

In the past few months, we have been feeling this pain as a company. Listening to our guts, we knew it was time to make a change.

So for the month of April, our team at Artifact Uprising has made the conscious decision to step away from the never-ending cycle of "busy" in search of a more productive, more creative and more fulfilling workplace. The goal? Make a six-hour workday possible through the limiting of distractions and ruthless prioritization.

Knowing the best ideas happen outside the four corners of a desk - another two hours a day will be committed to making time for the things that make the team their best creative and visionary selves. This includes yoga, hiking in the foothills, writing, reading, etc - the team is free to use this time as they please.

"Our hope is that what's good for our team will also be good for our customers - that this experiment will actually lead us to our best work," says Artifact Uprising's co-founder Jenna Walker. "The greatest success we can hope for in building this company is to build a place where everyone’s dreams and personal lives are supported. We all deserve to live extraordinary lives - every single one of us.”

The experiment will certainly be a learning experience for all. We'll be sure to keep ourselves honest and ask plenty of good questions. Is it possible to grow a successful business all while living fulfilling, creative lives? How can we keep space open for creativity?
