Gender Representation in Ad-Tech

Gender representation is a hot topic in today’s world, especially as it relates to women within the technology industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women are 33 percent more likely to gain a college degree than men and makeup 47.5 percent of the country’s workforce. To extend it further, the technology industry sees an average of about 30 percent of women within their overall workforce and 15 percent in technical positions. As a female that works in ad-tech, I see the gap between women and men being narrowed over time, but it is still in need of improvement – and there is something we, as an industry, can do. We must do more than ‘talk the talk,’ on gender equality. Instead, we must put into place a mix of inclusive talent and advancement strategies, which demonstrate results.

Recent events, like Uber’s sexual harassment stories and the Women’s March on Washington, have pushed this topic to the forefront of people’s minds. Women’s participation in the tech sector is one gender gap that is unfortunately wide and growing. The gender gap in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) has widened since the 1980’s, when 37 percent of all computer science graduates in the U.S. were women. Today, that number is a mere 18 percent. By 2020, Girls Who Code estimates the shocking statistic that there will be 1.4 million computing related jobs in the US, but women will likely only fill three percent of them. Despite many women earning technical degrees and attaining positions in the tech sector, 56 percent end up leaving their positions at the “mid-level” point, when the loss of their talent is the most costly (Center for Work-Life Policy). To change the trajectory of these statistics and predictions, there is much more work to be done.

In my position at Choozle, I was thrilled to find that females make up 40 percent of Choozle’s workforce. So much so that I shared my insight with MarTechAdvisor. Read more here.
