As this summer has taken an unexpected turn for many, career plans may have been put on pause. But these six Colorado companies prove otherwise.

And it’s not just a title and salary these companies are offering, team culture and core values matter too. VP of Marketing George Sturgis said employees at the absence management software company AbsenceSoft share “the Colorado trait.” Embracing a love of the outdoors, they get together for running groups, exchange pet photos and create Spotify playlists. Career is just one out of the many similarities his team has in common.

For more company surprises (ever heard of a guanaco?) and team culture traits, read below.

pinnacol
pinnacol assurance

What they do: Pinnacol Assurance is a state-centric private insurance company that specializes in workers’ compensation cases. Their mission is to keep workers safe and healthy on the job.

One thing that would surprise people about Pinnacol Assurance: Pinnacol is over 100 years old. “However, don’t let our age fool you,” Talent Acquisition Specialist Mallory Hynes said. “Pinnacol is committed to taking care of Colorado employers and workers in innovative ways. We celebrate continuous improvement, innovation, compassion, teamwork, integrity and excellence.”

We want to hire and retain people who care for others and are excited about keeping Colorado workers safe.”

One trait all team members share: “We describe our environment as a ‘culture of caring,’” Hynes said. “We care for our customers, Colorado community and employees through our passion for people and innovative ideas. We want to hire and retain people who care for others and are excited about keeping Colorado workers safe.”

Pinnacol team members are also active in the community with unlimited time off to volunteer.

fivetran
fivetran

What they do: Fivetran replicates applications, databases, events and files into cloud warehouses. Data analysts can focus less on engineering and more on driving insights.

Fivetran has shown me what it means to be selfless in the workplace.”

One thing that would surprise people about Fivetran: C-level executives sit alongside the rest of the staff and immerse themselves in daily culture events. “The very first day I walked into our office, I was pleasantly surprised to see that Taylor Brown, Fivetran’s Co-Founder and COO, was sitting next to me,” Annie Johansen, a field marketing manager, said. “I simply thought he was chatting with a colleague nearby for a moment, but time went by and he still didn’t move. Lo and behold, I finally understood that that is in fact his desk.”

One trait all team members share: “One of Fivetran’s core values is ‘one team, one dream,’ and this is a value I see reflected across the company on a daily basis,” Johansen said. “Whether people are looking for collaboration, ideas or information in a specific area, someone always steps up to help.

“Fivetran has shown me what it means to be selfless in the workplace. This trait helps build, grow and drive the success of others and the company overall. A lot of companies talk about teamwork, but at Fivetran, you really feel the team spirit and are empowered to make a difference.”

absencesoft
absencesoft

What they do: AbsenceSoft is a provider of absence management software which, for human resources departments, is crucial to the productivity of the workforce. When using their software, human resource teams are available to keep track of ever-changing MLA, LOA, Disability and ADA regulations.

One thing that would surprise people about AbsenceSoft: “Our culture is truly that of a family,” VP of Marketing George Sturgis said. “Our company has grown a lot since its founding in 2013, but what hasn’t changed is the connection between employees. It’s not uncommon to see our development team having a random dance party at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday or have our founder sit with you at lunch while he’s wearing a cowboy costume because he lost in fantasy football.”

Our culture is truly that of a family.”

One trait all team members share: “One that comes to mind is ‘the Colorado trait,’” Sturgis said. “We are outdoor runners. We are pet lovers. We are music lovers. Our running group runs North Table Mountain during lunch. Photos of our pets litter the office and even make guest appearances on our Zoom calls. We are always listening to music and even creating company Spotify playlists to help share our different tastes. The Colorado trait is what really brings us together and we love everything about it.”

procare
procare solutions

What they do: Procare Solutions’ software helps with childcare management, parent engagement, integrated payment processing and services.

One thing that would surprise people about Procare Solutions: “From day one you are part of the team and your opinion counts,” Director of Customer Support Joe Huisman said. “Like all fast-growing companies, Procare Solutions is moving and changing quickly and what sets us apart is that we are making all the right decisions. This is truly a place for people who want to be a part of building something amazing.”

This is truly a place for people who want to be a part of building something amazing.”

One trait all team members share: “Collaboration is in the DNA of every employee,” Huisman said. “There are no silos here, and everyone works hard to move the ball forward. ‘Elevate one another’ is not just a core value listed on our website, it is who we are. We approach work as a team, respect all perspectives and build each other up every day.”

housecanary
housecanary

What they do: HouseCanary uses data and analytics to predict the future of the residential real estate business. Their technology creates predictions for over 100 million properties up to 36 months into the future.

One thing that would surprise people about HouseCanary: “Even though we are in the real estate data and analytics industry, we don’t always require our employees to have a real estate background,” Ivy Rivero, a talent recruiter, said. “What we look for is talented and driven people who want to solve big problems and help disrupt the overcomplicated residential real estate space. It’s important to have a diversity of thought, and we want our team to have varying opinions, skills and ideas. We truly believe that all of our team members bring something different and special to HouseCanary.”

One trait all team members share: “We like to work hard, but we also like to play hard and celebrate our wins,” Rivero said. “Our team does a great job of balancing work with meaningful relationships with colleagues through fun culture-building activities. This is what unites our teams and spurs them to excel both when working and socializing in and outside the office.”

nursefly
nirsefly

What they do: NurseFly helps connect nurses with employment opportunities around the world. They work with healthcare facilities and staffing agencies to match nurses with their dream destination and patients with the best care.

One thing that would surprise people about NurseFly: NurseFly has a secret mascot. “Our engineering team in Denver has a bizarre love for guanacos,” Emily Hartmann, head of people, said. “It’s a non-domesticated llama that is in the same family as alpacas and camels. Our love for guanacos at NurseFly comes from some of their qualities; they are wild, free and are considered very lucky when spotted by locals.”

We have an ability to work in an environment of ambiguity.”

One trait all team members share: “We have an ability to work in an environment of ambiguity,” Hartmann said. “Being a small startup, we don’t have a lot of structure or firm processes in place yet. My first day at NurseFly, I was handed my laptop and was basically told, ‘Figure out what you’re doing and get going.’ We do not work in an environment where people are telling you what to do. If a team member wants to try something new or implement a new process, great! Go for it, figure it out and make some mistakes. It’s a setting for pure creation and an ability to build from scratch.”
