Tech sales can be a notoriously competitive industry. Beyond the motivation of closing a deal, these sales teams understand the value of a little extra incentive through team praise, island getaways and big bonuses.

We connected with two Colorado tech companies to learn how they recognize their salespeople’s success.

Payments company Worldpay operates the backend of all your debit and credit card purchases. Leader of Program Strategy Walker Thompson told us why he values small wins and how he celebrates those achievements.

 

Success comes in all sizes. How do you recognize the small wins? How do you pull out all the stops for the major ones?

Calling out small wins is key to my management style. It builds momentum with any team or individual. This approach is similar to athletics. A good workout or training session can translate to a strong race finish or game day win! That attitude is exactly what I look for. I seek employees who are willing to learn along the way.

To showcase the small wins, I ask the team to present key learnings or winning highlights during team meetings. Intrinsic motivators, like sharing a best practice that help someone else succeed, are incredibly powerful. When it comes to the major wins, a group celebration is one of the best ways to reward a team or a project leader.

 

Success is also both individually and collectively won. Talk to us about individual incentives you have in place, and ways you might celebrate as a team.

Our company acknowledges individual contributors through technology in a unique way. We have a platform that allows employees to recognize their peers with e-cards that are posted on a social stream. Everyone sees the win and can also ‘like’ the posting! It’s a powerful and organic way to commend a colleague. Our senior leaders are great at bringing folks together for dinners and special events to honor our teams. For example, we have a year-end awards dinner where we celebrate our sales teams and the departments that helped us reach our goals!

Director of Talent Acquisition Miriam Lea gave us the inside scoop on the company’s efforts to recognize hard work, including a trip to Greece and quarterly bonuses for every employee.

Working at Invoca is a team sport. We always recognize big and small victories across the organization. It’s not uncommon for someone in marketing to get props from sales for a new piece of content.

We have a company-wide Slack channel dedicated to pumping up the sales organization for wins of all sizes. We take the time to celebrate wins during team retrospectives before we dig into potential improvements. We also have monthly all-staff “Invocations” where successes are called out for the whole company to share in the win.

We hold a yearly President’s Club trip to celebrate our top salespeople and top performers in each department with a week-long, all-expenses-paid trip for an employee and their guest to an exotic location. This year was Costa Rica. Next year the team is heading to Santorini Island in Greece.

Each employee is part of our bonus plan. The sales team earns a bonus based on their position and amount of revenue earned. All other employees receive a quarterly bonus based on the company’s success. We believe that every single employee contributes to our success.
