The writer must be passionate about three things: (1) technology (2) building innovative tech products and services; and (3) helping companies grow. 

So what would I be doing? 

While every day is different, you can bet you will be responsible for:

Content creation and curation

Pitch and write at least 10-15 tech-focused stories a week. Built In covers: breaking news stories (fundings, exits), profile pieces, evergreen content and data-based trend stories. A story is not a story unless it has interviews with relevant companies/entrepreneurs and supporting stats. Use as many words as it takes to tell the story, but no one will probably read it if it’s more than 800 words and no one will respect it if it’s less than 500.

Deadlines

Create and quickly churn out error-free articles multiple times a day, 5 days/week.

Research

Responsible for constantly consuming tech news and sifting through tech reports each day;

Conduct in-depth research for both quick turnaround and long-term features;

Identify content relevant to Built In’s hyper-local audiences and produce original content through analysis or synthesis of existing stories;

Find and articulate underlying stories in Built In’s own data reports and in other published tech reports; and

Regularly attend tech and startup events to source the untold stories. 

What type of folks are you looking for? We want people with: 

Communication skills

Must be comfortable approaching and interviewing high-profile individuals; and

Must be a clear, professional and confident writer.

Writing skills

Snappy, upbeat, clear writing voice a must;

Experience with social media preferred;

Knowledge of effective headlines;

Previous experience writing for a tech publication preferred; and

Interest in and knowledge of the tech industry a must!

Flexibility

Welcome to the 21st century where being a writer isn’t a 9 to 5 job. This writer might need to work some evenings or weekends (like responding to emails or attending events outside of work hours) to really get the job done.

Ability to fit into our team

The writer will need to get along with our team. Like us, this writer must be intrigued and invigorated by the prospect of working in a fast-paced, startup environment.

We also really appreciate when team members have great time management skills, the ability to multi-task, an uncompromising ethical code and the ability to stay composed under stress. Humility, selflessness, collaboration, honesty and a strong work ethic are also really important to us.

Education

While a journalism or communications degree is preferred, we value intelligence, personality, experience and overall fit over a degree.
