NetApp | SolidFire is looking for an experienced Software Engineer who is passionate about developing innovative solutions for our state­ of­ the ­art storage solution. This is a high ­visibility role that will impact the fundamental performance of our new cloud storage product.

As a senior software engineer, the individual will lead new product development, testing and debugging of operating systems that run NetApp (or its derived) storage applications using Agile development and NetApp proprietary automation test processes. As part of the Research & Development function, the overall focus of the group is on competitive market and customer requirements, supportability, technology advances, product quality, product cost and time-to-market. Therefore, this software engineer position will focus on enhancements to existing products, as well as definition of roadmap and new product development.

Essential Functions:

  • Debug Linux OS/kernel complex issues on various platforms (include but are not limited to RedHat, SUSE, Centos and LoP)
  • Design, develop and module/integration test Linux multipath solutions in C/C++ as well as support issues at different layers within Linux OS/kernel, for both NetApp proprietary and open-source products
  • Conduct performance analysis and optimization for different Linux device driver and NetApp storage array stack layers
  • Work with Linux OS vendors and communities on open-source device driver issues and promotion of innovative enhancements via Bugzilla channels
  • Participate in technical discussions with groups within and outside immediate Business Units to create business synergy within NetApp and across Linux industry
  • Ability to come up with and execute on initiatives that will contribute towards NetApp’s business goals, as well as establish NetApp’s industrial leadership
  • Mentor junior engineers within surrounding functional units

 

 

 

Job Requirements

 

  • In-depth knowledge and extensive development experience in Linux, Hypervisor-technology, major Operating Systems and associated device drivers
  • Possess strong technical skills in Linux OSes to be highly innovative and task-driven to produce measurable aggressive business results and demonstrate the ability to lead complex projects
  • Working experience with Data Storage, Xen, ESX, KVM is greatly desired
  • This position requires an individual to be creative, a quick learner, driven to produce results and demonstrates the ability to lead small teams or projects
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are essential
  • Work collaboratively within a team environment of other engineers to meet aggressive goals and high-quality standards
  • Possesses sufficient technical knowledge and experience to pick up new expertise quickly with guidance from a technical leader
  • Strong aptitude for learning new technologies
  • A strong understanding of complex concepts related to computer architecture, data structures and programming practices
  • Ability to estimate work completion required to build an overall predictable plan
  • Follow standard engineering principles and practices
  • Resourceful in applying creative ideas to solve problems
  • Experience with Linux is a must, any other OS is a plus 
  • Track record of being a key contributor in successful projects

Responsibility:

  • Responsible for non-routine and unstructured tasks, requiring creative solutions with more interdependencies and with processes that are less defined
  • The individual works on complex problems with partially defined, larger scope
  • May work with teams across the company in problem solving and design efforts
  • The individual will begin to develop a technical specialty

Interaction:

  • Work effectively with staff to senior manager level employees within the function and the technical team on assigned projects. There may be communication with employees in other functions within Business Units as required
  • Work independently
  • Successfully convey information to stakeholders at many levels related to the position
  • Participate as a proactive contributor and subject matter expert on team projects
  • Demonstrate favorable results through coaching and influencing others

 

 

 

Education

 

Education & Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience is required. 6 to 8 years of experience is preferred
  • A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, a Master Degree, or a PhD; or equivalent experience is required
  • Demonstrated ability to have successfully completed multiple, moderately complex technical tasks
