 The Release Train Engineer (RTE) is the “Chief Scrum Master” for the train – someone who facilitates program level processes and program execution, escalates impediments, manages risk, and helps drive program-level continuous improvement.
As a core team leader, the Release Train Engineer (RTE) drives processes and execution, escalates impediments, manages risk, and promotes continuous improvement throughout the organization. The RTE possesses solid understanding of applied agile methodologies at scale, which is essential in understanding the unique opportunities and challenges associated with organizing, facilitating and continuously aligning a large software program with the guiding business strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Owns train execution and delivery of work (schedule/capacity), focuses on train health, a guardian of agile framework for train. 
  • Owns the Delivery of Train Committments
  • Chief Scrum Master / Scrum of Scrums Facilitator
  • Monitors and reports on release train health (i.e., progress of feature completion)
  • Owns train capacity management
  • Owns the facilitation of release planning events
  • Owns the facilitation of the following meetings:  “Product Council”, “Inspect and Adapt” Scrum of Scrums (SoS),
  • Participates in weekly cross train enterprise release management meeting
  • Dependency management (via release planning Cross-train delivery meeting, Rally)
  • Owns train health reporting with the purpose to provide transparency on how the train is tracking to the quarterly release plan commitment
  • Owns the escalation and coordination of train impediments, as needed
  • Facilitates “inspect and adapt” train retrospectives (quarterly) and drives continuous improvement
  • Stakeholder management as needed
  • Ensure that train adheres to Enterprise practices and proper communication channels
  • Advocate for Lean/Agile and engineering best practices
  • Supports vendor integration as needed
  • Drive train-level continuous improvement via Inspect and Adapt workshops and constant demonstration of a Kaizen mindset
  • Work with Product Manager, CPO and Product Owners to align business strategy and release plan execution
  • Facilitate release planning ceremonies
  • Provide daily leadership and coaching to scrum masters, team members, and agile managers in the successful adoption and application of scaled agile practices.
  • Drive the Product Owners, Product Managers, Scrum teams to facilitate release planning preparedness (definition, grooming, scoping) to ensure that each release train has an actionable, prioritized backlog. 
  • Ensure that the Program/Train has high visibility and understanding of the critical data for the release train – dependencies, issues and risks, Inspect & Adapt plans, train-level metrics, etc. and communicates appropriately.
  • Lead Scrum of Scrums meetings. 
  • Facilitate team collaboration across teams, CPO, and System Architect to ensure high quality technical delivery.
  • Participate in Portfolio and Program Management process improvement and standardization activities. 
  • Act as a role model and change agent from traditional project manager/program manager to Agile servant-leader. 

Basic Requirements

  • 8+ years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 6 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 3 years’ experience; or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years combined experience with Software Development and serving as a scrum master
  • Demonstrated experience as a scum master using Agile and/or SAFE methodologies
  • Experienced with and within Scrum, Kanban, and/or XP teams
  • United States Citizenship and the ability to obtain Government-issued Security Clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Passion around facilitation, empowerment, and servant leadership
  • Development experience with object-oriented software
  • Knowledge of multi-tier, heterogeneous architectures and how they typically fit together
  • Understanding of what it takes to keep a high-availability software platform healthy
  • Tremendous Organization and Communication skills
