The Director of IT will be responsible for managing the technology enablement and infrastructure of the company and providing direction and mentorship to our IT Operations Engineers. Responsibilities will include defining and executing a high level strategy to drive efficiency and effectiveness of SendGrid’s corporate technology infrastructure.  The IT department supports a heterogeneous end user environment consisting of Mac, Windows and Linux end users across several geographically disparate corporate sites. This role will also manage corporate communications including VoIP, teleconferencing, VPN, and secure distributed networking to ensure efficient, seamless and scalable operations throughout a distributed location environment.

We are looking for someone with strategic experience designing robust solutions that scale, a penchant for solving tough technical problems, dedication to ensuring high-availability and a natural ability to fit into our dynamic, fast-paced culture.  This person will help take IT Operations from being reactive to being the proactive technology leaders across SendGrid’s technology ecosystem.  

What You’ll Do
  • Lead SendGrid’s IT team, including vision and mission, performance management, coaching, prioritization, maintaining team budget and project management  (Agile/Kanban experience preferred)
  • Be a key leader in defining and delivering on SendGrid’s longer-term technology infrastructure strategy, with a strong emphasis on security and scalability
  • Lead company-wide efforts by working collaboratively across the business to improve the effective use of technology
  • Run integration and development projects to ensure that data can flow freely and securely between systems to facilitate data driven decision making for the business
  • Work with Operations to ensure that our IT strategy for production data centers is in line with company wide objectives and aligned by financial constraints.
  • Configuration, deployment and desktop support of Mac OS X, Windows and Linux systems
  • Administration of corporate IT servers and infrastructure
  • Acquire and configure desktop machines and infrastructure equipment
  • Train end-users on best practices, new software and policies
  • Setup and maintain remote office infrastructures including network, video-conferencing and phone systems
  • Some travel will be required

About You

  • Ten to Fourteen years of experience with at least five years management responsibility
  • Previous work experience in a late stage start-up/quickly scaling business is a plus
  • Strong documentation ethic – capable of maintaining and authoring internal procedure & policies
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment while maintaining awareness of the larger organization
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining highly technical problems in "plain" English
  • Ability to perform well and keep the team motivated under-pressure and tight timelines
  • Extensive business knowledge with comprehensive understanding of the functional area.
  • Ability to recognize the right tool for the right situation/problem, equal weighting of both commercial and open-source solutions
  • The ability to take initiative, solve problems, make big decisions, take risks and communicate effectively
  • Experience managing data center operations at scale
