[ibimage==24226==Original==none==self==ibimage_align-right]Virtela hailed itself as the world's largest independent managed network, security and cloud services company. They will have to drop the independent label in the coming months.

The company, headquartered in Greenwood Village, recently announced that it will be acquired by Tokyo-based NTT Communications, one of the largest telecommunications services companies in the world. In 2013, NTT Corp. ranked No. 1 in the telecom industry on the Fortune Global 500 list with operating revenues of more than $133 billion. It is positioned 32nd among the top 500 corporations worldwide.

“Virtela is well known for its strong technology, networking expertise, global reach and highly regarded services," said Akira Arima, CEO of NTT Com. "As we advance our Global Cloud Vision, we expect to continue offering enterprise customers the highest possible value in services ranging from branch office networking to large-scale cloud migration.”

The deal to wholly acquire Virtela is expected to close in the next few months.  After the deal closes, the respective operations, services and networks of both companies will begin an integration process that will take several months.  During this process, there will be an assessment of the companies’ respective services and the stronger, better performing assets will be utilized by NTT Com.

Virtela’s 400 employees will add to the corporations’ already enormous workforce of 17,850 in 87 cities and 31 countries.

Using Virtela’s flexible service activation and advanced management infrastructure will further enhance NTT Com’s high-quality broadband network services in nearly every country of the world.  The acquisition expands NTT Com’s global network services coverage from 160 to more than 190 countries/regions.

Virtela already had global operations with delivery centers in the United States, India and the Philippines, serving more than 500 customers worldwide, including many of the world’s largest multinational companies. By enabling the transition of branch office IT services to the cloud, Virtela gives enterprises the benefit of an “asset-light” software-defined networking model that delivers 80% cost savings in upfront capital and 30% savings in ongoing operating expenses.

It's been a busy run for the local company. Last month, Virtela celebrated being named a 2013 AlwaysOn Global 250 Winner based on a set of five criteria: innovation, market potential, commercialization, stakeholder value, and media buzz. The AlwaysOn Global 250 recognizes leadership among industry peers and game-changing approaches and technologies that are likely to disrupt existing markets and entrenched players in the Global Silicon Valley.

The news of this acquistion is not only good for both company's global reach, but here at home in Colorado according to Jane Morrissey, Virtela's Vice President of Corporate Communications.

"NTT’s planned acquisition of Virtela is positive news for Colorado, particularly the technology community, as Virtela plans to accelerate our growth within the state and beyond as we serve more customers and introduce more industry-first cloud networking services around the world," said Morrissey.
