SendGrid Moves To Denver, Continues to Grow

This fall, SendGrid opened an office in Denver. The Boulder-based company “alleviates the pain of sending application-generated email for developers,” says CEO Jim Franklin. He wanted to move to the Mile High City to have access to a wider employee base, which seems appropriate considering the 30 job openings at his company right now.

Each month, SendGrid sends seven billion emails on behalf of clients such as Pinterest and Foursquare to tens of thousands of users, many of whom were acquired over the past year. Franklin says SendGrid has improved the feedback loop between email senders and receivers, making it easier to make sure only desired emails make it to subscribers’ inboxes.

Last week, SendGrid announced a new partnership with Twilio, which helps clients manage voicemails, text messages and other types of messaging on the back-end.

“As a result of our partnership with Twilio, our customers get one-stop shopping for their web and mobile application’s communication needs,” Franklin says. “We are making it easier for the enterprise to manage their communication layer between their applications and customers.”

To date, SendGrid has raised over $27 million in venture funding. Their investors include The Foundry Group, Techstars, and 500 Startups. According to Frankling, the company is growing two- to three-fold per year and needs personnel of all types to sustain that growth. In the future, he hopes to grow the company to the point that it can go public, and intends to scale in 2013 to move closer to that goal.

By the end of next year, Franklin wants to accomodate over 100,000 users and 10 billion emails per month. With dedicated email newsletter services at 20 percent of the cost compared to competitors, Franklin expects to steal market share as well.
