Over the past year, Simple Energy has developed so many more claims to fame than graduating from Techstars. Now, backed by over $8 million in funding and at 55 employees, and with over 1 million residential households accessing their online platform, the company is poising itself to become a significant gamechanger to the energy economy.

Four years after their initial launch, the startup is expanding their reach globally to Canada in partnership with two utility companies in Ontario.

To bolster consumer effectiveness, Simple Energy is launching a team challenge component to the product in July: "Users will be able to join an energy challenge team when they create their online profile. By joining a team participants will help local organizations, such as schools and non-profits, compete for cash prizes. Points earned by households who reduce their energy use will be contributed to their selected team. This will be tracked using an online leader board. Users will be encouraged to invite friends and neighbors to join their energy challenge team via email, Facebook and Twitter."

Thinking of new incentives to change the engrained habits of the average consumer is something that the team is restlessly working on. The team is comprised of inherently environmentally-friendly folks who thrive off of effecting positive change in the world - staffers actively compete in exercise challenges for charity and the Simple Energy office has been a hub for the Girl Develop It program in Boulder.
