In Colorado, many people declare themselves outdoor enthusiasts and are well informed when it comes to the latest gear and emerging trends. Tommy Joyce gets to take it to a whole new level. As the Production Manager for online outdoor gear community Active Junky, Joyce rarely has enough time to wear out his outdoor merchandise before he’s acquired a new round of gear to test and review.

Joyce took his basic videography and photography skills and turned his social media internship into a full-time position that flies him around the continent to capture content during the new gear testing excursions. Joyce has been the lead production manager from Utah to Chile. Not to mention, he actually gets to test the latest active gear. “If I see something that catches my eye on the web, I’ll reach out. But a lot of the times, newer companies reach out to us,” Joyce said.

Concept Artist, Orbotix

[ibimage==26418==Medium==none==self==ibimage_align-left]“I’m just livin’ the dream right now,” said Kyle Wheeler, about his job as a concept artist at Orbotix, without a trace of the sarcasm that usually comes along with that statement. Orbotix, a Colorado company that is bringing the digital connected toy revolution via robotics and phone-controlled open devices, recently launched their first product, Sphero, which uses Orbotix's API to create with a small globe-shaped robot controlled by a smartphone.

For all those thinking that the tech industry is inaccessible, Wheeler didn’t start out as a digital artist or in the tech industry. He started out as a custom brush artist in the automotive industry, doing work for companies like Harley Davidson, Ford, Dodge. He started to migrate into digital by teaching himself the basics of all the programs and then got his foot in the door at Net Devil in Louisville, where he started out as a Brick Monkey. At that time, Net Devil was doing a project for Lego, and the Brick Monkey was in charge of sorting all the Lego parts in stock.  “Once folks noticed my talents,” said Wheeler. “They gave me a chance, and I didn’t let anybody down, and that’s kind of how my career progressed in the digital industry.”

Will McCollum, General Manager for Uber Denver, knows that being escorted around like an ambassador doesn’t come without hard work. A CU graduate, McCollum said he wanted to originally work in green energy and “change the world.” Today, he is doing that in his own way by leading policy changes to initiating innovative new-user acquisition strategies, essentially helping change the way people get around the world.

“No one in the world would have thought that the transportation sector would be so exciting,” McCollum said. “It’s not the product, as long as you're working with innovative people. People make the company.”
